Thermal analyses
WTI conducts complex thermal analyses using analytical and numerical calculation methods. The numerical simulation of heat transport through conduction, convection and radiation forms an important basis for component design. To calculate temperature fields, both steady-state and transient analyses are performed using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD):
- Thermal analyses for the design of transport and storage casks regarding cask loading and processing, long-term interim storage and transport, design of casks for final disposal
- Fluid dynamic design of interim storage facilities for casks with heat-generating waste, long-term temperature studies, analyses of dew point undershoot and condensate formation
- Accident analyses (development of thermal accident concepts, fire simulations, temperature development in case of component failure, thermo-mechanical analyses)
- Validation of calculation methods (FEM/CFD) based on temperature measurements
